  • Born on 13 June 1942 in Minna, Niger State
  • Attended Minna Native Authority Primary School (1950–1956) and Government College Bida (1957–1962)
  • Completed technical education at Kaduna Technical College (1963)

Military Career

Military Service

Joined the Nigerian Air Force in 1963, transferred to the Army in 1966. Served in the Civil War and UN peacekeeping in Lebanon (1978–79). Rose through roles such as NDA Instructor, brigade commander, and Chief of Defence Staff (1997–1998).

As Head of State

  • Assumed power on 9 June 1998 after Abacha’s death
  • Declared national mourning and committed to democratic transition
  • Oversaw elections (LGA, state, national, and presidential)
  • Peacefully handed over to Olusegun Obasanjo on 29 May 1999
